Colored pencils are divided into 12 hues:

Red Purple,Red, Red Orange, Orange, Yellow Orange, Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, Blue Green, Blue, Blue Purple and Purple and tints and shades are arranged into nine values 9 being lightest and 1 being darkest. These are placed in separate jars as per hue. Makes it easier to find the exact tint or shade I need as I have 300 pencils!
